In October 1974, during a visit to the Bernares Conservatory, I met Panchu Maharaj, the important Tabla player. I asked him if he could give me lessons, and so it was that I started visiting his home. I stayed at Bernares until the beginning of January 1975, and was grateful to Panchu Maharaj and the warmth, trust and welcome that his family showed me. In that short time I only scratched the surface of this instrument and its complex music.
